Termination of 121.5 MHz Beacons

On 1 February 2009, the International Cospas-Sarsat [1][1] Organization (U.S. included) will terminate processing of distress signals emitted by 121.5 MHz Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELTs). This means that pilots flying aircraft equipped with 121.5 MHz ELTs after that date will have to depend on pilots of over flying aircraft and or ground stations monitoring 121.5 to hear and report distress alert signals, transmitted from a possible crash site.

MEETING MINUTES  Nov 20, 2007

7:20  After a delayed start, President Kent de Santis introduced Cheryl Janke, the CEO of  Jet Repair Anywhere, who gave an excellent overview of the many aspects and benefits of  PAMA National membership. It was a return visit to us by Cheryl, and she is always welcome to join us for the evening.

The food for the evening arrived, and we wish to thank our sponsor Norm Hill and Western Jet aviation for a great Mexican buffet dinner

7:56  Kent introduced Norm Hill, VP Sales/Marketing, of Western Jet Aviation, who presented a “condensed” version of an eight hour course he offers for the Rolls Royce Tay 611-8 engine almost exclusively used in the Gulfstream IV aircraft.

Norm has extensive background in the jet aircraft industry, and presented a very fascinating, interesting, and instructional look at what is one of the cornerstone components of a very highly successful segment of business aviation.  There was never a dull moment as Norm presented the specifications, design features (in  particular, the unique cooling systems) utilized in the Tay engines.

The term “Tay” was  explained as a river in England!  Rolls Royce names all of their engines after an English river!  That was a revelation.

Oil flow diagrams, schematics, control mechanisms, safety devices, servicing techniques at the module level, and other feature were presented, giving the listener a good “feel” for the engine. A conclusion he offered in closing was that it is an “old school” workhorse, very reliable, difficult to repair on the aircraft, and will be replaced or upgraded in the future to be compliant with the noise and emissions requirements now becoming more stringent.

Many thanks to Norm for making this presentation to us.   Please hurry back.

Kent closed the meeting with options for our annual Christmas get-together, which appears at this time to be a pot-luck affair held at our present meeting site, on our next scheduled meeting date, Dec. 18, 2007.

9:20  (nom)  Meeting adjourned..

MEETING MINUTES    Oct  16, 2007

A fried chicken and chips snack was enjoyed by the group prior to the meeting, thanks to Ken De Santis.

President Ken De Santis opened the meeting with discussion about the next meeting and the need for research for our Christmas party.  He then presented the first (FAA) video which was entitled “Regulatory Environment for Replacement and Modification  Parts.”  The presenter was Craig Beard.  It was an excellent overview of definitions, such as “prime” manufacturer, OEM manufacturer, bogus parts, the relationship between  “approved” parts, and listings of the requirements to attain airworthiness, as defined by the FAA in 1958 as:

·        FAA approved design

·        In a safe condition for operation

The video also discussed the use of the term “FAA-PMA” for critical parts, and the use of the form 8130-3.

A short video prepared by Eglin AFB entitled “Mishap Response for Advanced  Composites”--  this very graphic video with footage of actual cleanups after a crash of an   aircraft constructed with composite materials revealed the facts and hazards of the hostile environment after a crash – this will affect any survivors and clean-up crews.  Special masks, suits, bagging materials, and sprays are necessary to inert the environment of airborne particulates and hazardous gasses.

The cleanup procedure was summarized in the “Five C’s”--

§         Concentration

§         Control

§         Cordon

§         Communicate

§         Common Sense

The final and brief topic on new aircraft life expectancy extension using robotics in new inspection techniques to observe degradation of safety related  as part of the “Aging Aircraft Program” was presented.

Meeting adjourned..

Any corrections or additions to these minutes are welcomed.

Secretary, PAMA- Long Beach/Orange County

MEETING MINUTES Sept 18, 2007

A light dinner of sandwiches, chips, fruit, and cookies was again provided by Ed Cohn, and was enjoyed by the group, prior to the evening activities.   At approximately 7:00 pm, the meeting was opened by PAMA Secretary Ed Cohn.  The only other officer present was the Sergeant at Arms, Roland Koluvek. Approximately 15 individuals, including members, prospective members, and a guest representing PAMA National were in attendance.

Our guest was Ms. Cheryl Janke, who gave a presentation on the merits of belonging to PAMA National.  She left material for our members to join PAMA if not already members.

Ed Cohn made a Powerpoint presentation with handouts on “Aircraft
Corrosion, Causes, Detection, and Cures,”which combined material from an excellent presentation by Prof. Carl Locke from the University of Kansas, and Ed’s own material on metal passivation methods.

A good showing of approximately 15 was encouraging, and we need to get the word out to more past and future local aircraft mechanics that they should be an active part of our organization.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately  8:30.

Any corrections or additions to these minutes are welcomed.

MEETING MINUTES    Aug 21, 2007

A light snack of sandwiches, chips and cookies was provided by Ed Cohn, and was enjoyed by the group, prior to the evening activities.   At approximately 7:00 pm, the meeting was informally opened with the introduction and presentation by Ed Cohn of the FAA video/DVD, entitled “Damage Tolerance, an introduction.”  We are indebted to member Jack De Silva for procuring this DVD.    This video provided good insight into the concept of TRACKING the progress of cracks, adjusting inspection periods accordingly for the affected aircraft, and how by better design, crack damage can be limited and not as potentially hazardous.

The president of our chapter, Ken de Santis, arrived during the presentation, and afterwards presented the meeting opening remarks.

A small sample of a DVD concerning the manufacture of the B17 aircraft was briefly presented, but will be shown at a future meeting.

A good showing of approximately 15 members was encouraging, and we need to get the word out to more past and future local aircraft mechanics that they should be an active part of our organization.

8:15 P.M. (nom)  Meeting adjourned.

Any corrections or additions to these minutes are welcomed.

February 2007

Tonight’s presentation consisted of three instructional videos that Ken Desantis presented.

The first  video covered the popular General Electric CF6 jet engine thrust reverser operation, was a detailed tutorial for the AMT technician how the reverser system works, and how to control and stow the reverser system.

The second video went into more detail into the maintenance, rigging and deactivation procedures for the CF6 engine.

Ken showed the final video which focused on theory of lift, aerodynamics, and  blade dynamics of the main lift rotor.  The video demonstrated the “four characteristic actions of the rotor blade”--

One (older) method of helicopter stabilization was shown to be the inclusion of a “stabilizer bar” in the rotor mechanism, which uses the “gyroscopic effect” to assist in vehicle stabilization.

There was no raffle this evening.

8.40(nom)  Meeting adjourned..

Any corrections or additions to these minutes are welcomed.

Meeting Minutes - January 16, 2007

6:30  Fried Chicken dinner was enjoyed by the members and guests in attendance.

7:09  President Ken De Santis opened the meeting with requests for next month’s topic, and a reminder that elections will be held in March.  He introduced our guest speaker,  our own Charles May of HRD Systems, a senior specialist in fire detection and detection, oxygen  and evacuation slides.  The presentation was entitled: Fire Extinguishers, Oxygen Systems, Oxygen Masks, and Evacuation Slides.

In tonight’s presentation, Charles May focused upon fire suppressants and detection systems, with a fascinating review of the historical development of suppressant materials, evolving from the 1A jet engine development and the Harrier program, to name a few.  Characteristics of Halon suppressants such as 1301, 1211 were compared to the newer military only materials such as HFC-125 and FM-200.   IR/UV sensors were discussed.

The application of firex systems to the new Very Light Jets was reviewed.

FAA Bulletin A/C 20-144 was mentioned as a good source for further study.

PAMA extends its thanks to Charles May for his presentation, and hopes he will continue it at an early date.

There was no raffle this evening.

8:45  PM (nom)  Meeting adjourned..

Any corrections or additions to these minutes are welcomed.

About Us

We started the Long Beach / Orange County Chapter in 2000.  We wanted to be able to bring the PAMA organization closer to the workforce in the heart of Southern California.  Our local founders are Marc McCune and Vic Saienni.  Although Vic is no longer with us, we have managed to maintain our membership.  We started the meetings at the Orange Coast College near the John Wayne Airport.  Due to a high volume of Long Beach members and the inability to eat at the school...we found a great new location at the Long Beach Airport.  Airflite, Inc has been more than generous to offer us their third floor conference facilities for our meetings.  The location offers plenty of presentation space as well as a friendly eating environment to enjoy our snacks that our provided by our sponsors and a great view of the airport.  We encourage any local members to attend our meetings and painlessly earn your hours required for your IA renewal.  It only takes 8-meetings a year to meet the requirements.  The meetings are a great networking opportunity that will also give you insight on local goings-on and information that would impress any employer.

We look forward to seeing you every 3rd Tuesday!
